This happens due to low impulse control! The part of the brain that allows us to consider our actions before doing them, the prefrontal cortex, is impacted by ADHD and Autism- leading to more impulsive behavior. For people without challenges with impulse control, waiting for your turn to speak can feel natural and easy. For me, waiting for my turn to talk (especially in an exciting conversation or something related to a special interest) can feel like I’m getting my teeth pulled. This doesn’t mean I don’t understand that I should wait for my turn to talk. Often times after I interrupt I realize what I did wasn’t socially acceptable and I apologize. This happens because the issue isn’t a lack of understand conversational rules, but rather a lack of control over my impulses. This isn’t a flaw, simply a difference.
