⚒️ In the summer of 1994 West Ham played a pre-season match against Oxford City. Two minutes into the second half, the then West Ham manager Harry Redknapp had made all his subs and one of his players had gone down injured forcing him to play with 10 men. Throughout the game, Redknapp had been getting heckled by a West Ham fan by the name of Steve Davies who persisted in questioning his tactics and personel choices in attack. In an attempt to teach Davies a lesson, Redknapp turned to him, asked him if he could do any better and told him to go and get changed so he could come on. Davies stood his ground, suited up and came on up front in the second half for his one and only professional football appearance. But it doesn’t stop there because to everyones suprise he SCORED A GOAL and even Harry Redknapp admitted that on the day he was better than West Ham’s starting striker. Stood on business. #Soccer #football #westham #harryredknapp

On November 29th 2016, Ben Woodburn came off the bench in a EFL Cup game against Leeds United and scored to become Liverpool’s youngest ever goal scorer at 17 years and 45 days. The forward was compared to the previous holder of the record, Micheal Owen and was nominated for the 2017 Golden Boy award losing to Kylian Mbappe. This would unfortunately be Woodburn’s only ever goal for Liverpool, going on 4 different loans between 2018 and 2022 before leaving on a free for Preston. He scored only 1 goal in 58 appearances and is now in League Two with Salford City. This weekend he faces Manchester City in the FA Cup… #Soccer #football #liverpoolfc #benwoodburn

On the 12th July 1998, a zombie-like Ronaldo Nazario played arguably his worst career game in the 1998 World Cup Final against France. Hours before the final, it’s said that Ronaldo suffered a convulsive fit in his sleep, leading to uncertainty about whether he would play. Initially left out of the team sheet, he was controversially reinstated just before kickoff. Despite his presence, Brazil lost 3-0 to France, sparking widespread conspiracies about his health, pressure from sponsors, and the decision-making of the Brazilian team management. Nobody truely knows what fully happened that day and conspiracies have rung throughout world football for decades since… #Soccer #football #ronaldo #r9 #brazil

In the summer of 2002 Ahn Jung-hwan scored the biggest goal of his career to know Italy out of the World Cup in the quarter-finals. It would also be the goal that would ruin his career. Ahn at the time was on loan at Italian side Perugia but the day after scoring he had his loan terminated by owner Luciano Gaucci saying that he had “no intention of paying a salary to someone who has ruined Italian football”. Gaucci later had to reverse his decision and took up the option in Ahn’s deal and signed him on a permanent basis. However, no intention of playing him. Ahn revealed that after the tournament, his car was vandalised, while local media claimed the mafia were plotting to kill him. Clubs in England queued up to sign him including Blackburn Rovers who agreed a deal to sign him. However, in an act of pettiness, Perugia blocked the move, citing contractual obligations, and demanded a fee of $3.8 million (£3m) from any club wanting to secure his signature. In the end, a Japanese entertainment agency paid Ahn’s release fee, and he was able to join Shimizu S-Pulse in the J.League. #Soccer #football #japan #ahnjunghwan

In 2007 Iraq pulled off one of the most unlikely triumphs in football history by winning the Asian Cup. Before the tournament the team was in turmoil with problems between the coach and the senior players mirroring the situation even worse back home, a civil war. Despite political disagreements within the squad, the players united behind the Iraqi flag and defeated South Korea on penalties to reach their first ever final however celebrations were cut short after news of a suicide bombing back home. A mother of a 12-year-old boy who had been killed in the attack appeared on Iraqi state TV and vowed not to hold a wake for her son, Haidar, until the team returned with the Asian Cup. Hearing her cries, the players pledged to win it for Haidar, and all Iraqi people. Iraq won the final 1-0 thanks to a goal from Mulla Mohamed: “All the Iraqi people scored, not just me”. Eleven footballers had done what the Iraqi parliament could not – unite a nation and bring smiles to people’s faces instead of tears and suffering.

🪄🎩 In May 2012 Lille had already confirmed their 3rd place finish in the league and that Eden Hazard would be leaving following their final game against AS Nancy. He was French Player of the year that year scoring 22 goals and was announced he was going to join Chelsea after they won the Champions League. To celebrate the winger leaving all the players went out the night before and Hazard arrived at the game the next day still drunk. He scored a hat-trick in 30 minutes. #Soccer #football #edenhazard

🪥🦷 On November 8th 2009, Chelsea defeated Manchester United 1-0 thanks to a header from John Terry. The game was made more memorable by a man caught brushing his teeth mid-game as Chelsea were making a substitution. Chelsea fan ‘David’ explained that “I was wanting to get to the game and I put it the toothbrush in my pocket and forgot to brush my teeth. I always brush my teeth before I go anywhere, I thought no one was looking at me.” He also explained that the reason he was wearing sunglasses to the evening kick-off was because he saw his ex-girlfriend at the game and didn’t want to be recognised: “I think I am a ladies man and I’m very good-looking.” #Soccer #football #chelseafc

In September 2010, Tony Pulis wasn’t on the touchline for Stoke’s game against Aston Villa following the passing of his mother. As the team trailed 1-0 at half-time Pulis arrived unexpectedly at half-time after travelling down during the game. Pulis brought on striker Ricardo Fuller and winger Jermaine Pennant as his side pushed forward in the second half. He was greeted by a standing ovation by the crowd and inspired a 2-1 comeback with goals from Kenwyne Jones and Robert Huth turned the game around.🐐 #Soccer #football #tonypulis #stokecity

On February 12th 2012 Zambia won the African Cup of Nations for the first time in the country’s history defeating Côte d’Ivoire 8-7 on penalties. The game took place in the Stade d’Angodje in Senegal, a stadium that was just kilometres away from the site of the 1993 Zambian air disaster which killed 18 players who were travelling to a World Cup qualifier. On the Friday morning before the final they gathered on a beach in Libreville, sang and laid flowers in the water for their compatriots who had died in the disaster. After a fairytale run to the final they came up against an incredibly talented Ivorian team featuring the Toure brothers, Didier Drogba, Gervinho and Salomon Kalou amongst others. But under the leadership of Herve Renard they triumphed in dramatic style. In the city of their greatest heartbreak, Zambia managed to achieve the most beautiful of victories. #Soccer #football #afcon #zambia #zambiantiktok🇿🇲

On November 11, 1988, Mark Hughes played two competitive football matches on the same day. Hughes played 90 minutes for Wales in a European Championship qualifier against Czechoslovakia in Prague and lost 2-0. As the players exited the field to wash off and recover from the game, Hughes made a quick exit from the stadium and headed straight to the airport and boarded a plane from Prague to Munich. Meanwhile, Bayern were kicking off against Borussia Mönchengladbach in the DFB-Pokal. “We actually flew over the ground and missed the first half.” He said. “But I got there at the start of the second half,” Hughes recalled. “Nobody could believe it. I was supposed to be hundreds of miles away in Prague. It wasn’t possible. And nobody was more stunned than the Borussia players.” Hughes was able to come onto the pitch as a second-half substitute. Down 2-0, Bayern would put together a remarkable come back to win the game 3-2 in extra time. “I’d like to say I turned it around but I didn’t because I was hopelessly knackered.” #Soccer #football #markhughes #bayernmunich #Wales

In 2015 Massimo Luongo was playing for Swindon in League 1 when he became 1 of 59 players to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or. The 23rd-year-old earned this recognition largely for his role in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, where Australia won their first-ever title, with Massimo himself scoring in the final. “I didn’t even know if it was real ... I thought it was someone trying to be funny,” he said. “It’s obviously a big honour, not many people get on it, I can say I’ve been on the Ballon d’Or list now. I don’t know what to say about it ... it’s a bit random.” #Soccer #football #luongo #ipswich #socceroos

On 13 December 1998, 39,000 fans at Villa Park stood in silent shock as RAF parachutist Nigel Rogoff’s half-time jump, while dressed as Father Christmas, went horribly wrong. Rogoff accidentally clipped the roof of the stadium as he descended and fell 100ft. However, instead of marking the end of his life story, it very much marked its beginning. That night, Rogoff survived life-altering injuries: two broken legs, a broken pelvis, and a broken arm. He remained on a ventilator for three weeks. After regaining consciousness, he decided to make a tough decision and have his left leg amputated above the knee. However, following this incident and the injuries it was met with, the parachuting Santa is not only alive but he is very much flourishing. At his Rehabilitation Centre he met a nurse called Sarah. They became friends and then fell in love, later married and had two baby boys, Harry and Oliver. By 2002, Rogoff circumnavigated the UK by kayak and hand cycle to raise awareness for the National Blood Service and the Royal British Legion. In 2015, he led the first all-amputee team to row 3000 miles across the Atlantic. Rogoff also holds a pilot’s license, scuba dives, and paraglides. Rogoff has very much made the most of his life despite the challenges the incident brought with it. Looking back at the incident he told The Guardian he apologizes to anyone who was traumatised at Villa Park all those years ago. “They came to watch a football match,” he said, “and they saw Father Christmas bounce off the stadium roof.” #Soccer #football #christmas #astonvilla #villapark

On Christmas Day in 1937, Charlton goalkeeper Sam Bartram played against Chelsea at on a foggy night at Stamford Bridge. Towards the end of the game the fog had gotten so bad that the visibility had completely disappeared. So the 60th minute the game was called off but Bartham didn’t hear it and because of the fog he couldn’t see the players heading inside either. So for fifteen minutes, he stood alone in the goal, waiting to be faced by a shot or counter attack that would never happen. Eventually, a policeman emerged from the fog, to inform him that the game had been canceled. When Bartram finally made his way to the dressing room, his teammates were already changed and ready to go! 🤣 #Soccer #football #stamfordbridge #charlton

In 2006, a 22 year old Emannuel Adebayor scored 11 goals in 12 games to DRAG Togo to their first World Cup. Drawn in a group with Senegal, Zambia and Mali in qualifying, it seemed unlikely that Togo would be able to topple these African giants. Up steps the Baby Kanu, who held the nation’s hopes on his young shoulders. With the help of Adebayor’s 11 goals, the Sparrowhawks soared to the 2006 World Cup and became the smallest African nation to qualify for the tournament. An unconventional shirt number, unbelievable scoring record and a golden generation spearheaded by a national hero breaking boundaries and putting Togo on the map. #Soccer #football #togo #afcon #adebayor

😳 On the 8th of February 2015, Leicester City Manager Nigel Pearson man handled Crystal Palace Midfielder James McArthur on the touchline. Pearson appeared to be joking rather than choking at first, when he put his hands around McArthur's throat. But the good-natured horseplay disappeared when Pearson inexplicably grabbed hold of McArthur's shirt and refused to let go while play continued claiming he McArthur had said something he wasn’t happy about. Pearson recieved no punishment from the FA instead they chose to “remind Pearson of his responsibilities as a Manager” Pearson later told the press “I'm more than capable of looking after myself." #Soccer #football #nigelpearson #leicestercity

On this day, 24 years ago, PSG announced the signing of a Brazilian forward named Ronaldinho for €5m. The 21 year old had been lighting up the Brazilian Serie A at Grêmio and rejected interest from Inter, Arsenal, Barcelona and Dortmund in favour of a “low-key” move to Paris instead… He’d go on to score 25 goals and create 17 assists in 77 games for the club and won the UEFA Intertoto Cup. The rest, as they say, is history… #Soccer #football #psg #ronaldinho #barcelonafc

🥋 On January 25 1995, Manchester United Striker Eric Cantona was sent off against Crystal Palace for a pull on Richard Shaw's shirt. While walking off he was heckled by an Eagles fan Matthew Simmons. Simmons charged 11 rows down to the pitch-side and allegedly barked: "F*** off back to France, you French motherf***er." Already sent off, Cantona turned towards him and decided to Kung-Fu kick him! Cantona was sentenced to two weeks in prison — although was later freed on bail and ordered to undergo 120 hours of community service — as well as being fined £20,000 and banned from first-team action for the rest of the season by the FA. When he was later asked about the incident Cantona said: “I’ve said before I should have kicked him harder but maybe tomorrow I’ll say something else.” “I cannot regret it. It was a great feeling. I learned from it — I think he (Simmons) learned too.” #Soccer #football #manchesterunited #cantona
